Question:

Why is my cat changing colour?

One of my cats is a quite dark tortoiseshell cat, mostly black and orange coat, and white on her chin and belly.

It's come to my attention recently that she's getting QUITE alot of white fur on her back and tops of her legs now! Is she going prematurely white???????

She is, of course, still gorgeous and will indeed age gracefully.......naturally.......but she's only 4 years old and I didn't expect she would be getting white hairs already!

Is this normal?

P.S. Here's her picture;

  1. aww, she's very pretty

My black cat has been getting an increasing amount of white hairs ever since I got him, I think it's just normal for some cats. One of my tabbies got so dark on top that we can barely see his strips any more, so I suppose they just change sometimes.

  2. I can't help much with your question, but I don't think it's anything to worry about.  Like someone said it's probably the sun.

But she is absoloutly beautiful and she looks very healthy

  3. Shesss beautifullllllllyyyy lush!

I Guess as long as shes healthy right?

it might just be like when teenagers go grey before they are 20!

    it happens

shes reallyy lovely lol :D x

  4. The picture link isn't working for me -.-

I think it is strange though from what you are saying.. The only time my cats have changed colours was within the first few weeks. I had a completely Grey cat turn full blown out Black and is still Black after 1 year.

  5. Its probably from old age or young age my puppy changed from brown to red

  6. old age

  7. My dog is only one year old and is getting white. Hes white, with big brown patches and as hes getting older his brown patches have been getting lighter and lighter. Also, its summer! If shes outside alot maybe the sun is just bleaching her hair. It can make human hair lighter, and pets are usually outside for a longer periods of time.

  8. THE LINK DID NOT  work , sorry not shouting , our chihuahua changed colors as well I have no idea why she was a fawn color and slowly she is turning BLACK!  when you get a good answer let me know as well  :)

  9. As old hair naturally sheds and new hair replaces it - it may not be as vibrant as the old.  As cats get old, just like humans, hair color changes as the body changes as the diet changes.  Some human children are born blond and blue eyed - 20 years later they are brunette and brown eyed (no, they didn't hit the dye bottle) - it's just genetics at work.  Usually cats won't begin to get "gray" until they are 14+ ---- notice I said USUALLY - there are exceptions.

    Very beautiful cat!

  10. Animals fur can change color at any age just like hair on people.I have a friend an she was getting gray hairs at 18. My cats fur under her neck is all white but she is old.Different for everyone
