Why not North Queensland?

I reckon the AFL is missing an opportunity up here in North Queensland

They should seriously think about a team in Cairns heres why

Booming area with loads of potential sponsers

Booming population base with a high percentage of ex Vic SA WA people

Easy access to strong player base from Darwin and NT and the expanding market in PNG

North Queenslanders will travel hundreds of kilometers to support there team so the supporter base will not just be Cairns but the whole of North Queensland

There are already four national franchises up here

Cowboys NRL

Crocs NBL

Taipans NBL

Northern Thunder A league

Ready made ground at Cazaly's.

Could possibly have other home games in Darwin

Easy to attract quality players winter in the southern states or beautifull North Queensland area has heaps of opportunies for families as well.

Soccer NRL and basketball recognise the opportunities up here I cant understand why the AFL hasnt realised the potential up here

  1. people wouldn't go, maybe at first for the novelty, but that would be it, they are into rugby league. sorry mate just don't agree.

why not tasmania, ready made footy fans, albury wodonga, footy crazy over 100,000 population. there are many places before they should consider cairns.

  2. I actully think that the AFL should look at the 18th team been in either Western Sydney (as said) or up in Cairns.

The reason why Western Sydney would win the vote over Cairns if there was a vote on it tomorrow is because Western Sydney have 3 full size grounds they can use...ANZ Stadium (formerly Telstra Stadium), Sydney Football Stadium and the SCG.

Cairns only have a small ground like the Gold COast does at the moment and I think that the AFL is planning to build a brand new stadium on the GC...maybe

I see where your comming from mate but wait for another 20- or so years when another team is on the brink of going broke and need to move...most likley Carlton or Hawthorn by then (joking guys) but just wait, one wil be there eventually.

  3. MATE,at a guess id say the AFL have done there own feasibility studies and probably have determined that north Q.L.D is not ready for them-in terms of support and the corporate dollar and also at the development level, where as they probably see the gold coast as a ready market and being such a big tourist destination no problem in attracting big sponsors and promoting the game to people from around the globe.

of course all this is just my un-educated opinion but I'm sure if there was potential at the moment for AFL to survive and flourish in nth qld, promote the game and make money-then this current crop of greedy ba$tards at the AFL would NOT miss out on their slice of the pie.

And on the Tassie issue, i think the AFL wont bother putting a new team their, they'll just wait until an old Melbourne club moves their in search of a new market-i.e Hawthorn.

  4. Totally agree, instead of a dead market like Sydney, the AFL should look at North Queensland for a third Queensland team after the Lions and the Gold Coast team.

  5. Sorry I'm with Dave Sullivan ( btw Dave give my regards to John, Kitty and Tom .. I thought you didn;t survive terry running you over????)

poor little Tassie has provided Australian Rules Football with some Brilliant players and coaches over the years ... and they have always been an Aussie Rules state .. They bloody well deserve to have their own team .. BUGGAR NTH QLD! ( sorry BUT the tassie folks have been waiting TOO long)

    PLUS IT'S TOO BLOODY HOT
