  1. They don"t.

  2. If the shades are open, passengers can keep track of which way is up during an emergency. Windows are also a source of light if the cabin goes dark. The crew dims the lights during takeoff so, if the plane loses power, your eyes won't have a hard time adjusting to the dark.

  3. As a flight attendant for a major commercial airline, contrary to what most people answer, there is a policy for making sure that your window shade is "open" during taxi, take-off, and landing.  This policy only adheres if you are seating in the window seat in an "emergency exit row seating."  Therefore, you are free to do whatsoever on your window shade if you're not seating in one of these "emergency exit seats."  The FAA established this policy and not the airline.  The FAA and your flight attendants want to make sure that you have a clear view outside that emergency exit window in case, of course,  of an emergency.  You have to make sure that it is okay to use that emergency exit in case you need to use it but if the window shade is "close" then how can you tell if it's a good exit if you can't see from the inside of the plane?  All passengers seating in an emergency exit window "MUST" abide to this federal aviation policy.

  4. They don't. That has nothing to do with a plane taking off...

  5. i've been on a plane quite a few times and the planes i have been on people never had to leave their shade up or close them. some people leaves theirs closed well others up.

  6. There is no set policy that requires you to keep your shade up on take off or landing...
