Why "soccer"?

has this word a relation to any other word??

like Football is called actually football because anyone like it to kick a BALL with his FOOT to have fun...or so...

but soc cer???

maybe in relation to sock?

does anyone know the source of the word "soccer"?

cuz americans couldnt take the fact the word football was already taken. so they tried to get us to use a new one. wont work.

mm i don't really know ask the amiricans they call football soccer? and their game call it football and in it they don't even use their footies.

I have the same question. I've lived in the US for more then 6 years and I got used to people calling it soccer! but I live around Mexicans and they call it futbol and I got more used to calling it Futbol but here online I usually say football! It depends on where u live and for me name doesn't matter what matters is the game itself!!!

i couldnt care less about the origin of the word soccer.i only use the word "football" cause it makes more sense to me

only the americans call it soccer

Because Football (American), Rugby and Soccer all derived from the same game, and are all called Football in certain areas.  Some English call Rugby - Football and Soccer -Football, that's even more confusing.

Don't get mad at Americans, just because the rest of the world ran out of ideas and decided to name several sports the same thing.

Soccer... SOCKer... Hmmm... interesting.

To tell you the truth, no... I don't have any reasonable explanation for this. I call it football now. I got used to calling it FOOTBALL while being here and when I use it with my other American friends, they laugh at me.

In Spanish you say FUTBOL or BALONPIE... I don't know why they use FUT either if FOOT in Spanish is PIE.

Ehm... I guess it's another thing that doesn't really have an explanation.

Yeah it's a stupid word isn't it. I don't get what they call American Football football (if that makes any sense) because they only kick the ball when they are scoring a field goal. The rest of the time they just run around with it. In football they actually kick it the whole time.
