Why school uniforms?

okay im going to a new school, new state and meeting new people but why should we have uniforms at school? bleah! i just dont undertsand because u can never express ur style. plz tell me why schools have uniforms.

I agree with reverenc.  And if you all look alike, the only way you can express your individuality is through your personality and/or talents.  In other words, someone might be a writer and someone a great artist.  It's what you "do" not what you look like.

My school has uniforms! The dang teachers sent out a dang survey to the dang parents and they frikkin voted yes on uniforms and I was like wth are you (bleeping) kidding me?!??! They are so ugly and plain ;_; So you're not the only one who has to wear the ugly things.

like if you moved to south florida i can explain better.

but because its the parents that chose.

you can express yourself.

jewelry,hair,belts,shoes etc.

its WAYYYYY better because you dont have to wrry what to wear, if you repeat outfits getting made fun of, everyones wearing the same thing and theres less cliques like that.

and noone knows if your poor or rich like that

I've worn a school uniform all mi life. The reason probably is that clothes take focus away from education. And for  people who r less fortunate. They may not hav nice clothes and may get teased about it. But yeah uniform sucks and I hate not being able 2 express myself 2.

schools have uniforms because they feel its better to prevent kids from wearing clothes that they find as inappropriate and stuff

if they get all the kids to wear the same thing then that problem would never present itself

But there are always ways around it

but i guess that depends on where you go

like if htey require you to wear a shirt with a school logo on it..well you can always do something to the shirt to reflect your style by cutting it or something so that you can wear it on top of another t-shirt you prefer

and if you have to wear certain colored pants\bottoms.. well you can always buy some clothes that you like that are that color =\

and hey maybe your school will fund dress-down days

i agree uniforms can be strange especially if you have never had that at your previous school. I would advice

to give it a try. uniforms are suppose to bring students to a level where there is no judgements and peer pressure. You have no idea how many girls suffer from low self esteem because they have to wear certain clothing or act a certain way to get notice or be at a certain group...believe me high school is not always going to be

your life eventually college comes in and thats what is important getting your education and feeling good w/ what you accomplish not what u wore to school...GOOD LUCK.

The idea is that with uniforms there can be no conflict over the image you project via clothing.  You can't wear gang symbols, low cut tops, or shirts with inappropriate sayings on the front.  There is also the idea that it levels the class system among students, that no one knows who is poor or wealthy when everyone looks the same.
