Balls in most sports are round for several reasons.  First, it's easiest to roll a round object around on the ground which many sports require.  Second, an inflated object that is round has more structural integrity than an inflated object of other shapes since the air pressure is uniform inside the entire object.  Third, tradition.  Most sports were invented by people who decided to use round balls and still are today.

One of the few exceptions is American and Canadien Football and rugby.  In those sports, the early players found out that a slightly bullet shaped ball flew more straight when thrown or kicked in a certain way than a round ball did.  Another exception is the birdie of badmitton which has feathers on one side of the ball also to make it fly straight when hit almost every time and to make it fall almost straight down when it's energy is spent.  This made it easier to play on a small field without having to chase the little ball down so much.  Try playing badminton with a ping pong or table tennis ball and you'll see the benefit of the feathers.  Also try playing American Football and kicking a round ball instead of a football and making it go exactly where you want it.  It's really hard.
