What was the reason for settlement of Delaware back in colonial America

  1. Although the Dutch were the 1st to settle in Delaware the Swedes were the 1st to live in Delaware. They settled in Northern Delaware, now New castle County and Wilmington. The dutch settled around what is now Lewes. The Dutch were wiped out by the Indians. The Dutch were there for trade but the Swedes were there for trade and settlement. The English came from Pennsylvania and took over the colony. The Swedes did leave the colonies with their idea of housing , it is called the log cabin.

  2. The Dutch established a trading post and the colony just grew from that.  William Penn needed ocean ports.
