Why would someone need and intranet?

What are some positives and negatives of one?

So that only certain people that meet the criteria and given access can use it.  Keeps the unwanted folks from being able to access your computers on the intranet.

Also you can add the differnt drives (s, w, etc) for all people on the intranet to see/use

Just some examples but if it is for someone's home, it would be kind of pointless.  For a big business that uses the internet primarily then yes.

large national / international companies use an intranet. It is an internal internet for company use only, work just like the internet, but for internal use such as job advertisments inside company, policy upgrades, away of ciculating information without emails bouncing to and fro. It is secure no viruses, you can put documents on there, download and upload, basically do all you can do on the internet but it is in an enclosed enviroment, a good way to keep a large number of employees abreast of company issues, be it union, job vacancies, promotions, etc.
