Question:

Will My generator run my AC?

I recently purchased a 5500 Watt 8800 Surge Generator. I hooked it up via a 220 in my garage. It runs into a 30amp breaker in my box. I noticed the AC runs through a 40 amp. Would I also need to run the 220 line I hook the generator to into a 40Amp in order to work my Central air if needed? I did try it but it blew the breaker on the generator.

  1. HVAC Tech.: Your generator is to small to run your a/c. The momentary(serge load) amp load at start up could go as high as 66 amps, Grossly over loading the breaker on your generator. Then there is the second part of your problem, Where will the 120 volts come from to power the inside unit that controls the outside unit??? You need a smaller a/c or a much bigger generator.
