Im from Australia and I have a Westpac Debit card (Mastercard). Im just wondering will it work overseas? Or should I look at other ways of taking my money overseas? What other ways are there? Whats the easiest?

Ive got pretty much everything else organised in the 'planning' stage of my holiday. I just DONT get the whole money situation.

  1. It is best to call the customer service  number on the card and ASK.  Some companies have a policy that the card cannot be used overseas.  Others just want notification from you of where you are going and the dates, so they will not think your card has been stolen.

  2. I've used my MasterCard debit card all over the world without any trouble what-so-ever. However, watch the ATM's you visit closely...some do not accept MC and some don't accept Visa. Just watch the logos. They didn't steal my card, but I panic-ed when they returned my card and gave me no cash. I thought I was being ripped off, but I wasn't.

The best part about using the ATM card is that they give you money in the currency of the country you're in or EUROs.  It's nice not to have to go look for an open bank to exchange currency. Just make sure you only take out what you need... they don't buy it back.

  3. Most debt cards with the logo ( MasterCard's) work throughout the world, I have not had much of a problem MasterCard and Visa work very well I have only had trouble with American Express Cards when I was traveling with the military and we didn't hit many tourist spots. Check with your bank and ask them what bank will honor your card in the countries that you plan to visit. Have a safe and great time traveling.

  4. It depneds on what ATM accepts your card. But most ATM's uses Mastercard. And don't forget the extra fees.
