Will the environmental field crash?

Remember in the 70's every where you looked their was something about the environment then it practically disapeared.

Do you think this will happen again? If so what will this do to the green job market?

  1. The environment field only seemed to disappear The number of people working on the environment continued to increase.  Today we are seeing a surge(not Iraq related) in the number of people needed to work on environmental problems.  A long as we continue to have too many people in the world with demand for too many "things" we are going to need more environmental people to minimize the impact of all those people on the planet.

  2. No chance.  The difference now is that global warming is becoming a problem that we can't delay addressing any longer.  Scientists are sounding the alarms, and on top of that, oil prices are skyrocketing and with our oil production reaching its peak, they have nowhere to go but up.

In the '70s the environmental movement was more about hippies just wanting to get back to nature and that sort of thing.  This time we're going green out of necessity.  Global temperatures and oil prices will only continue to rise, so the environmental field is here to stay.

  3. i cannot say it any better than gaby said it. he gave the perfect answer.

  4. I sometimes wish it would as it is today. It needs to be changed to "Environmental Engineering" where proposals are made on facts and proper long term analysis instead of knee jerk reactions based on feelings based on the premise that "Man is Bad". Look what the "Environmentalists" have done to our world:

We are dependent on oil from our enemies and fuel prices have risen primarily because "Environmentalists" killed our Nuclear Industry, Stopped most all new Domestic oil drilling, stopped all new refineries, Put in place auto emission levels that will not allow us to be driving the 60-70 MPG cars Europe and the rest of the world has.

Our "Environmentalists" convinced us that we would fall freeze due to global cooling by now? Now they say we will all roast.

Our "Environmentalists" still cling to the myth that all will be well if only we stupid idiots would use Hydrogen, wind and solar, which it turns out (like Engineers have said for many years) it will not produce enough for a long time, and doesn't work well in most areas of the world anyway.

Our "Environmentalists" still cling to the myth that everything that is wrong is due to our Industry and Governments and will not even discuss the possibility that it is simple population growth that is the root cause of all pollution.

  5. The only reason that awareness of the environment faded in the 80's was because of the repressive, conservative Reagan era. Reagan made it his first official act to remove the solar panels from the roof of the White House.  Carter had planned for America to be energy independent by the year 2000!  When the snarky belligerent righties got  hold of the media,Carter, and his plans were ridiculed! Now look where we are!

  6. Well, I can imagine that once the novelty wears off, you'll stop seeing things marketed by companies solely because they are the "green alternative". I mean, when the sustainable choice becomes the mainstream choice, then there is no need to trumpet it's advantages. You don't see big labels on meat that say "Now produced on a factory farm!" because it is the norm, and if and when sustainable products become the norm the cultural fascination with them will subside.

However, in terms of collapsing as in no longer existing, I doubt it. Green jobs just makes sense, socially, environmentally, and economically. Something that re-localizes jobs instead of outsourcing while at the same time costing less and polluting less? Seems win-win.
