Question:

Will they write my car off?

Long story short, I got sandwiched between 2 cars today (nice for my first day back at uni).

There is damage to the front and back of my car, looked as though my radiator was pushed towards the engine and the bonnet was crumpled up. And the back bumper and boot were pushed in in the middle about 20cm. The car still drove though (I had to get it off the road somehow) but I had it towed just to be sure.

I'm insured for $6600, the tow truck guy said it looked to be about $4500 worth of damage. So a $2100 difference for them to fix or to replace.

Is it likely insurance will opt to fix it, or write it off?

  1. It depends on the insurance company, but in general I have always been told that if the damage exceeds 2/3 of the cars value they will total the vehicle.  However, when dealing with accidents involving commercial vehicles I have seen better deals offered to insure that there aren't any court tie ups.  I've never seen that number in stone but that is what I was told on three vehicles.  Hope it helps.

  2. Better have the insurance write off. If you get it fix then later on you will have more problem. The tow truck dont do body work. You have to take it to body shop to get estimate and might cost more or less.

  3. The answer may vary by person. It would be a good idea to hear some of them and try to choose the best one. Here is a good one.http://car-insurance.easyideas4u.info/ca...

  4. Wait for the formal estimates.  The tow driver isn't an insurance adjuster.  Generally if the repair cost exceeds 75% to 80% of the fair market value, the insurance company will write it off and pay you the FMV.

  5. Depends on where the accident occured. Each state has different total loss thresholds. But generally speaking, if the cost to repair is at least 70% of the value of your car, then they will consider it a total loss.

If your is worht $6600, then the repairs would have to be at least $4620 for them to consider it totalled.

    Hope this helps
