Wimbledon 2010 all set to begin
This year has been a season of upsets along with injuries for the game of tennis. Tennis master Roger Federer during this season has faced some inquisitive defeats along with his failure to trespass a number of the match points. Leyton Hewitt knocked the big man out of a tournament in Germany which also ended Federer’s winning match streak of 16 matches against Hewitt.
The men’s side is taken back by some luminary deficiency of the players participating in the tournament. Federer always insists that Juan Martin Del Porto is expected to play some special tennis after he was defeated Federer in the final match of the Australian Open during the previous season. However, other than him, there is a list of other absentees in the tournament.
Another talented name that is worth mentioning here is Ernests Gulbis who is facing a hamstring problem these days and will not play the tournament as a result. Ernests played extremely well against Nadal as well as Federer during the clay court period. Similarly, Ivo Karlovic, the man who is famous for his serves is also not contesting at Wimbledon due to his foot injury. Danger man Fernando Gonzalez from Chile is also out due to his periodic knee issue.
Over all, a total of nine players in the list of top 50 world rankings from the men’s side are not contesting in the tournament due to injury problems. About a quarter of players in the total of 128 are those who have qualified straight away while some players come in as wild card entries.
Moreover, some of the top competitors have stood back including Andy Murray who has stammered since making his way into the Australian Open during the month of January 2010. Novak Djokovic on the other hand is also out of the tournament. Last season’s finalist Andy Roddick has had a bad season after experiencing a couple of defeats and is thus not perfectly fit for a match at Wimbledon.
According to Roddick, Federer is one name who is always amongst the list of hot favourites at Wimbledon. Nadal on the other hand after winning his French Open title this season is also in blazing form. Murray will have the advantage of playing in front of his home crowd. According to Federer, Murray has played some incredible tennis during the Australian Open tournament so he cannot be ignored in Wimbledon beyond any doubt.
Hewitt who has been seeded at number fifteen by the committee of Wimbledon due to his good winning record on grass is another danger man who can play some interesting tennis to watch beyond any measure of speculation. Hewitt would be facing Djokovic in the fourth round of the tournament according to the paper. Andy Roddick also speaks high of Leyton Hewitt’s tennis.
As far as the women’s side is concerned, the bookmakers have once again named Serena Williams to be the top seeded player for Wimbledon. However, there is not much to predict from the women’s side earlier. Williams definitely appears to be fit.
Venus Williams is also expected to do well at the All England Club due to a good record. Venus on the other hand is not playing the best tennis of her career in the recent past.
According to the 30-year-old Francesca Schiavone, the Williams sisters have triumphed in a majority of the tournaments over the past eight years so they are likely to get another title this time as well. Their confidence as well as power matches no one as both can play equally well on any track. So, it would be really interesting to see if anyone can knock them off their crown.
However, this is the tricky part. In a Grand Slam tournament, Nadal, Federer and the Williams sisters always look to win the tournaments until that stage when someone actually does defeat them.
