Question:

Window safety??

Is there something that you can put on your windows to where a child can not open the window?

My window did have these little tabs that you can pull out to prevent it from going to high but they broke off, I know real cheap windows but we can't afford to get new ones right now. My daughter, who is three almost 4 years old, can reach the locks and unlock them and open the window which scares me because the windows she can reach are upstairs.

I would like to get something to put on them but I am not sure what to prevent her from opening the window.

Thanks.

  1. You can buy locks at the home improvement center which attach to the window and prevent them from being opened.  There are the type that use keys and go on the slider rails, the type that clip on the slider rails that must be muscled back to release and there are the type that use a twist tab that screws into the rail and must be released to open the window, all of which do not require drilling into either the window or frame.  The latter type can be used on windows that open vertically or horizontally.  They come in packs of two and are found both on the hardware and child proofing aisle at the home improvement centers.  I've supplied these to all my renters, particularly those with children, because they cause no damage and give an added measure of safety for very little money.

  2. Some companies call those tabs, burgular stops, but in my opinion, it's a window, and it WON'T stop a burgular. Those tabs are only glued into your window sash, and can be replaced from a hardware store, or your window manufacturer.

To my knowledge, if you have those pop-out tabs, you are dealing with a reasonably good quality window, and that kind of replacement should be covered with the window warranty.

  3. The simplest solution is to put a couple of screws into the frame, so that the window will bump into the screws when opened. You get to determine how far the window should open by how far away you put the screws. This way you can have a window that opens a few inches, but not enough to slip through the opening.

  4. Yeah basically the ones they use in apartment buildings are blocks that the window can't get past, same idea as the first answer.  If you don't want to s***w into the metal frame you just need to take a block of wood and cut it into an L so it can s***w into the wood but still reach the window to block it.

The "real" ones sometimes have ways to disable them so you can open the window all the way if you wanted.  Of course children are often better at opening "childproof" than adults

  5. There should be holes where the clip came out....Put a large nail on each side........better to be safe than sorry.........

  6. Tell her that this is the window that the Monsters come in and only this window so don't ever open it or the Monsters will come in and make us eat spinach all night with No Milk! or the s***w thing works, even better if you have a cordless drill/screwdriver
