Question:

Windows Defender and McAfee Antivirus?

by  |  earlier

I have Windows Vista Home Premium on my laptop included with Windows Defender, Firewall etc. and a trial for McAfee Antivirus. When I had enabled both Windows Defender and McAfee in my security settings to protect my laptop, It says that both firewalls are off while for my malware protection only Windows Defender is on and working actively ? Sometimes it takes a few minutes for both to work properly. Whats going on? Should I have both running at the same time? Or does Windows just need time to recognize that I have both of them enabled?

  1. It doesn't matter if you have them running at te same time, however i do sugegst you use Avast www.avast.com than mcafee as it is free and better than mcaffee.

  2. Remove McAfee because it will conflict with Windows Defender.

    Install Clamwin.

ClamWin is a Free Antivirus for Microsoft Windows

that uses the GNU General Public License by the Free Software

Foundation and is free (as in freedom) software.

Because it is free, the standard requirements for antivirus programs

would not be quite appropriate here. It doesn't have real-time

protection, so it can only be used as an on-demand scanner and doesn't

offer any real-time on access protection. However, this is where its

usability lies - as an additional layer of protection, it's very good.

With no real-time protection ClamWin won't conflict with any other

    Anti-Virus program.

Clamwin's programmers designed an unique scanning engine that no other

antivirus has so it increases the chances of malware getting detected.

The scanning engine scan everyfiles like it is searching for head lices

    with a tooth comb.

Most malwares are designed to attack popular antivirus products,

but since Clamwin is much less used, it's capable of fighting the viruses

    when industry leaders fail.

    How to configure ClamWin

Update the latest anti-virus definition files.

Set the preferences to delete or move virus to a quarantine folder.

Boot up the infected PC in safe mode [press F8].

Scan all hard drives for viruses.
