Wireless network question...

I have 2 wireless routers and I'm running a piece of software called iStumbler (on my Mac) which monitors wireless activity and measure signal strength. I only need the wireless function of 1 router so I disabled the wireless function one of the routers thinking that the signal strength of the remaining router would improve, but it didn't. Any ideas why? They are both 802.11 g routers and they are both the same distance away from my computer's antenna...

  1. You should NEVER run 2 routers on the same connection, they will conflict and cause slower connections, possible serious data losses and sometimes even service loss. If you need more connections than one router can give you should use a network switch for extra wired connections, or a wireless access point or range extender to get increased wireless range.

  2. The amplitude of the signal is the amplitude of the signal - it wouldn't change.

What might change is one router interferring with another router if they transmitted on the same frequency.

  3. Disconnecting the other router shouldn't help your bandwidth unless it was being used. And, the signal strength has to do with your connection to the router, not the internet. So you can keep both on and have no problems. To get a better signal, move a router closer, or buy a range extender, new antennas, or install custom firmware.
