  1. It is easy to do. That is what I am doing now. Linksys WRT54G series are great wireless routers and relatively inexpensive. Their set up is simple. If you buy local try BestBuy, on the net try Newegg or TigerDirect. You will have a wire from your modem to your router and one from your router to your desktop computer. Use the one plugged into your computer now you don't have to move it on the computer end. Be sure to set up the encryption. It is easy too. Linksys is good at helping if you don't understand any of it.

If your new laptop has an "N" band card you can use an "N" band or "G" band router. G is the cheapest and if all you are going to do is use your laptop for the internet and not send large files between your desktop  and laptop G band works as well as the more expensive N band.

  3. i recommend a linksys wireless router. u hav to plug it in a computer u already hav in the house though. and no software installation is required

  4. If you want a cheap one that has good speed and good signal, I would recommend you this D-Link one: http://www.compusa.com/applications/Sear...

If you want 5x more speed and 2x signal (if your laptop supports Wireless N) then the cheapest one you can get is this other D-Link one: http://www.compusa.com/applications/Sear...

  5. I prefer a linksys router, but you can ask your isp because they know which routers work the best with their specific modems they provide. A router you just have to plug in to an outlet, and plug in the modem to it and you can access it wirelessly. I have a dlink, and it works fine as well. Make sure first thing you do is put security on your router though so others don't use your internet and slow it down for you.

  6. To get to the internet you need some sort of broadband connection (cable or DSL).  Routers used to work with dialup too, but hardly any do now.  Some DSL companies offer a combination wireless/router/modem (which I have).

Of course if you really want to go wireless anywhere, cell phone companies have a USB, PC card, or express card device that uses cell phone frequencies anywhere you get cell phone reception.

  7. I own a laptop with centrino built in, so theres no need for anything to plug into your laptop. My best advice would be to go into any computer store and tell them your situation. I'm currently using a BelkinG+ MIMO wireless router. Bought from PC World about a year ago for about £79.99 but they have halved in price now I believe. What it does is route the internet wirelessly round the home through your original broadband router at your computer. So my best advice would be to ask in store to someone who knows what there talking about and they should be able to help you. Also, many routers etc. come with very decent instructions, and most people of all abilities could manage to set it up. Who is your internet service provider?  Anyway, in the source list I have provided the information for my router which is extremely good. Used for cable internet providers (Virgin Media, NTL, etc..) Good luck :)
