  2. What about world 1958 chess champion?

  3. Mikhail Moiseyevich Botvinnik

Botvinnik liked to refer to himself as first among equals, and with good reason.  After winning the Soviet Championship with the dominating score of 16 out of 18 games in 1945 he won the World Chess Championship tournament in 1948 with a convincing score of 14 out of 20 games.  In 1951 he retained  his title by playing a drawn match against David Bronstein 12-12.  He again retain his title in a drawn match with Vasily Smyslov in 1954 12-12.  In 1957 he lost the title to Smyslov 9.5-12.5 only to regain it again in 1958 from Smyslov with a score of 12-10.  In 1960 he again lost his title this time to Mikhail Tal 12.5-8.5 then won it back in 1961 from Tal with a score of 13-8.  He finally lost the Title for good in 1963 to Tigran Petrosian the score 12.5-8.5 .  Fide refused to allow a return match and Botvinnik chose not to compete in the next cycle of matches leading to a World Championship Match..

His book "100 Selected games: is considered a classic and one of the best chess books ever.

  4. Just to add on to the information some guys here have given:

Botvinnik was really amazing, he held the championship crown, lost it twice, and immediately reclaimed it in the rematch. In the 1958 case, Smyslov had actually beat Botvinnik narrowly the year before, but was instead defeated in the rematch in 1958. Similarly, Mikhail Tal, who also won the title from Botvinnik, lost it again to Botvinnik a year after.

Sadly, when Botvinnik lost it the third time, the Federation of Chess banned the rematch option, and the winner (Alexander Alekhine) managed to keep it for many years.

    Sure hope that helps =)

  5. 1958 - Botvinnik defeats Smyslov in a rematch by the score 12.5-10.5 to regain the title. Just call me Aweshom
