Question:

Would all the fish be happy?

I have one male betta and two cory cats. It's a ten gallon freshwater tank with a working filter. Would everyone be happy if I added five neon tetras and possibly one more cory cat? (The cory cat is debatable).

  1. I would add more cory cats.  They like to shoal, as they do in nature.  Some neons should be fine... as long as you add at least 5 and no more than 10.

Rainbow fish would also be a colorful additive to your tank.  They are more expensive than neons, but very active and gorgeous when mature.  I would recommend lacustris... or tourqoise, they are probably the most color for the least expense.  Although Praecox is gorgeous... There's so many beautiful bows.  You should be safe at 5 bows if that's what you were to decide to go with.

That would fill your tank, and you should keep up at least every other week water changes.  I do every week on all of my community tanks.  Also, if you don't have a heater, please get one, the cory's will thank you for it.

Also... the cories will clean up some uneaten food, but they actually more or less move the gravel with their barbels and that causes the food to bury up in the gravel.  This is excellent if you intend to have live plants at some point.

  2. Just make sure you add a large enough school (5 or 6 -- you might be a bit overstocked, but nothing more frequent water changes can't take care of) to prevent he Betta from attacking the neon tetras, since there will be too many targets. Neon tetras can also be quite nippy, so if you add a large school, they will do all the nippiness to themselves and not harm the Betta.

Add the cory cat, cories like having company and will make them feel more secure. :)

*ready to see some thumbs down on Maria's possibly misunderstood post*

  3. I personally don't like cory's because they can get big, don't look good, and don't clean good. A male betta can go in with anything, but a male betta. However, a predatory fish will eat it, and a lot of other fish might nip at it's tail. I don't think you would have a problem with neons though. Try some really docile fish to put in with it, but remember you need like 4 square inches of surface area for every inch of fish. Good luck.

  4. Well, the cory cats would be happier if you added another cory cat.  They are very social fish and are always happiest in groups of at least 3 or more.  I doubt if either the cories or the betta would care if you added neons or not.  The neons would be fine in a school of 5 though and you would probably like watching them swim around.  The 10 gallon tank can certainly handle it.

  5. Most tetra's are not a good fit with betta's. Tetras tend to be fin nippers and Betta's are slow moving. Another cory would be good as cory's are happier in groups of 3 or more.

  6. i don't know,..but it would certainly look good!

  7. I think it should be okay.

  8. yep they would get alooooooong

  9. id put

    1 more cory

2 otto cats << they clean

i wouldnt go with a school because the betta is the senter piece of the tank

  10. maybe just get another cory cat unstead of neon tetras they would get hurt real easy

  11. They should be, but some betas are mean and others aren't as bad...

  12. I would definately add another cory cat or two but, tetras are fin nippers and will really do a number on your bettas fins. Tetras will also need a heater because they are tropical fish. The cory cats will too. Do you have a heater in the tank?

  13. I think so, it would look real good also and have some move ment in the tank
