  1. You may want to add Dish Network to your list of choices.  It's what I use.  I'm in Georgia, but it's available about anywhere in the U.S.; for $49.99 you get a receiver for 2 rooms, the top 200 package and the local networks.  I pay $79, but I get 8 channels of HBO,10 channels of Showtime and The Movie Channel, 6 channels of Encore, the top 200, the local networks and I have an extra receiver.

When I was making my decision, I noticed that DirecTV had a better start-up package, but after 3 months, their normal monthly charges were higher.  I don't know if they are still higher, or not.  But be careful of any of the come-ons that try to get you to sign up and get a great opening deal, then raise the rates after a few months.

  2. I don't know what suits you best, but I personally prefer cable. This is because of the On Demand. It is usually cheaper than pay-per-view, and is way more convienent. Cable is similarly priced to satellite (probably depends on your area). satellite usually has better dvrs, can be cheaper, and has more hd channels. But satellite will cost more for multiple rooms, you have to stick the dish on your roof, and you need a set top box in every room (unless you cheat and somehow manually run cables through the whole house, i have seen it done, but it saves you about $5 a month and is a huge mess). overall, i would pick cable because of its advantages and reliablility. you can lose satellite signal in bad weather!
