Question:

Wrist position on piano?

when i play the piano i usually have my wrists down and not elevated. My new piano teacher told me that i've been doing it wrong all along and i should play with my wrists raised in the air but doing so it feels very awkward and my hands get tired quickly.

Is there a certain way you should position your wrists or is it all personal preference?

  1. Your teacher is right. For classical piano you need your fingers to hang down from the wrists. You will get used to it in time. Also, check that your piano stool is at the right height for you. If it is, then your wrists should sit in the correct position naturally, and it shouldn't be so tiring. It is an ergonomic thing, and makes for better technique and speed..

  2. ur new teacher is right..playin with your wrist elevated is the right way..playing with ur wrist down is a big no no and it will make playing the piano harder(wrists down)

  3. I think that you will be able to have more dynamics if you get used to the elevated position. And though you are not used to it now, your wrists will thank you later (less carpal tunnel problems)

  4. yeah, technically your wrists need to be elevated and I think that it does make things easier. You just need to give your muscles time to get used to the new position. It will make things easier in the long run and you'll find that your movements are less restricted.

  5. the technically "right" way is to have your wrists elevated, but really, it doesn't make a difference.
