i got a 60 GB 360 and want to convert the data between them. I created the same offline profile name for both (same picture too) but it says item can not be transferred? also what happens if I move my profile from my 20GB xbox to my 60GB xbox, will the achievements still be on the 20 GB xbox? the only item I was able to copy was oblivion and call of duty 2, assassins creed, GTA 4 and others wouldn't go.

  1. i believe you have to purchase a data transfer kit which supposedly makes the 20 gig hard drive worthless while moving all of the data to the larger drive..

  2. You can do this using the Xbox Hard Drive Transfer Kit, but there are a few rather large catches.

The Transfer Kit performs a one-time content move from a smaller drive to a larger drive. (There is no option to transfer data from a larger drive to a smaller one, and the one-time bit is important: the contents of the smaller drive can only ever be moved to the larger drive once. Additionally, the smaller drive will have its contents erased as part of the transfer. It's worth mentioning that along with the erasure of the original drive, any saved games or downloaded content on the new drive will be erased.) You'll therefore have to re-download any Xbox Live Arcade games and other content you're purchased (BUT read the bit about licencing for a potentially great big catch). Microsoft suggests that if you've already saved games to your new drive then you should temporarily copy them to a memory card until after the transfer. Preloaded content on the new drive will generally remain, although some of it may "change" during migration (Microsoft's wording).

Once the data has been migrated you'll then have to transfer the licences for any Xbox Live Arcade games, in-game content, DRM-protected stuff and so on. To do this you'll need to use the Licence Transfer Tool which you can access here:

    http://www.xbox.com/en-US/support/system...

Note that film rental licences are not transferred, so Microsoft suggests that you "make sure you watch your movies before using this tool."  Note also that you can only perform this licence migration once every twelve months, which doesn't sound like it should apply in this case, but I know of one person who bought a new drive and transferred the data and licences over only for the new drive to die on her a few days later. When she got a replacement drive she found she was unable to transfer the licences again so soon and had to endure a lengthy call to Xbox technical support to get it all sorted out.

One very important point is that once you've performed the transfer, your licenced, downloaded content (such Xbox Live Arcade Games, some in-game content and so on) will only be available in the user profile in which they were originally downloaded, and only when your console is connected to Xbox Live. Other user profiles will find that Xbox Live Arcade games have reverted to their trial versions, and some other content may simply be not usable at all. Only the user profile which originally downloaded the content will be able to use it fully, which may or may not be an issue depending on how many user profiles you have on your Xbox. Should you lose your Xbox Live connection, some content (such as Xbox Live Arcade games)  immediately revert to their trial verions whereas some content will simply become unavailable altogether until your connection is re-established.
