My cat is being treated for ear mites and yeast infection in the ears. The vet has prescribed Xenodine once a day for 3 weeks to treat it. I have read up on this medication and it says "not for use in cats or kittens". Should I be concerned or stop using it? Why would the vet give this to my cat if it could harm him?

  1. no clue

  2. The above post is correct. It takes lots of research and research funding for the medication to be approved for each species. Most medications are approved for dogs way sooner than cats. But the vets have the knowledge and they read the medical journals they know when vets as a whole have decided that the medication works equally well on cats and they also know when it has been shown to be dangerous as well. Usually the vet will say this has not yet been approved for cats but has been found to be safe and very effective in treating this type of illness in cats YADA YADA YADA

  3. There are some medications that are used to treat certain problems in cats that have not been "approved" and are used off the market.

However, vets have been using medications that are not for use in cats or kittens for years, as it is a very common practice.  This does not mean it will harm the cat, just that it is not approved by the FDA.

Continue to use the medication...it's fine.

  4. Are the ingredients the exact same? If so stop and go to another vet. Report this so the original vet.
