I just ordered Yamaha YHT-380 receiver and speaker system. I have an Infocus Projector, and was wondering if I could just hook the component cables from my DVD player straight to the projector and only hook up the audio through the receiver, or do I need to hook the dvd player up to the receiver then hook the receiver up to the projector? Basically do I need to go through the receiver for video or can I go straight to my projector. Thankls.

  1. Going straight to the projector is preferred and running audio to the receiver is how I have my system setup.

Running video through the receiver makes it an easy to use system, but you have to insure the bandwidth on the video switching jacks is 90 Mhz or more for HD video.  May "Component Switching" receivers are only designed for standard def video.

  2. Either way. The video connections on the receiver allows you to select which video source goes to the TV. This is as opposed to sending all of the video sources to the TV and switching the input selector.

Say you have a cable box with component video outputs and a DVD player with component video outputs. If you hook up the component video cables to the TV and bypass the receiver, you use the TV's input select switch to determine what you're watching (cable TV or DVD). But, if you hook up the component video cables to the inputs on the receiver, and then hook up the component video outputs from the receiver to the TV, you use the input selector on the receiver to determine what you're watching.

The only time this can be an issue is when you don't want multiple sets of component video cables going to the TV (like if it's mounted and you don't want to see so many cables going to the TV). Then you would use the receiver to select what video source is going to the one set of cables feeding the TV.

Also, keep in mind that the receiver will also select the audio source going to the TV. That is, you hook up the audio line output from the cable box and the DVD player to the receiver such that, when you select either source, you are selecting both audio and video. You then adjust the audio using the volume control on the receiver.

I currently have my system set up where I have the audio and video going directly from the cable box to the TV. I then run the variable audio out from the TV to the receiver and vary the TV volume to the receiver (I leave that on one certain setting). I do this, because I want to control the volume from the TV, since I get a visual indication of the volume level on the TV screen.

  3. I do this all the time and it works fine. Yes you can hook one section up to one thing and the other section up to another.
