I have cleared out my loft this week and found several small heaps of dead beetles and their larvae up there! They look exactly like the sort of beetle you normally see in the garden - the plain black ones'. Can anyone tell me why and how they got up in my loft and more importantly what they are doing up there? Are they chewing my rafters to bits?

  1. Insects are likely to get in anywhere, there may likely be a nest in there. Thankfully it isn't wasps (that we know of), you may need to get an exterminator in.

  2. Take care whilst you are up there anyway - cover your nose and mouth with a folded damp teatowel as their dung may be airborne and may make you unwell. If you are going to move the dead mass just be aware.  If in doubt take one to a vet. most homes have a wildlife book maybe friend with kids may have one and they can help you identify it if you take one in a jar.  Insects and beetles are everywhere so don't worry too much but protect yourself until it's identified.  You can always ring your local council there will be a charge but they will ensure it is dealt with correctly.  Good luck :)

  3. i have beetles all over my deck. they are attracted to wood. buy some "beetle powder" from home depot or somehwere. i just bought some today and sprinkled it around my deck and this should kill them all off.
