  1. my gunsmith had to replace the ferrule on the handguard that attaches to the gas tube to stop the lever from popping up.  They are expensive for a small piece of metal, about 35 bucks.

  2. Don't file the gas lever bar. Listen. I know what the problem is. The gas tube is resting up against the gas lever bar, when it should be under it. When assembling your sks you should be able to hold the gas tube all the way down against the spring operated piston and it should be in that same position once the gas lever is fully engaged in the down position. If the gas lever is holding the gas tube back then the jolt from the gun causes the gas tube to slam against the bar and pops it up. File the gas tube at the same angle until it can be pressed all the way into the spring piston with the gas lever engaged. Don't make the gas tube shorter, just file the top of it until it can rest underneath the gas lever bar. This is the solution I found.

  3. It may not be the gas piston, but the other spring operated piston that the gas piston rams into located underneath the rear sights. The round piston extends past the bar that the gas lever is connected to and then on the way back it runs into the edge of the bar and causes the lever to flip up. If you shave your furniture it may cause a looser fitting gas tube. Check to see if it is the spring operated piston first. Is there an indentation of the round face stamped into your gas tube? This means the piston is shooting past the rounded bottom of the gas lever bar. I bet you can look on the rounded part of the bar and see wear from the spring piston striking it. Try filing down the worn area, but dont file down the whole bar or it wont hold down the gas tube. Just file the part where the spring piston is striking it. Concentrate on the part that it hits when the gas lever is down, so that you wont file the part that holds the spring piston in when the gas lever is partially up during dissasembly. Boo-yow! Pain in the but issue resolved!

  4. The Gas Piston is probably striking the edge of the lever's bar. Try to get the gas pipe to angle downward a little by shaving off some of the bottom of the furniture at an angle. I have the Tapco gas tube and I shaved off those little stumps on the bottom on the side closest to the chamber. Basically, you just want to keep the piston from bumping the bar that locks the gas tube into place. Hope this helps!
