i need help on catching channel cat fish. i live in south florida and i have never angled for catfish before, this is my first time trying to get a catfish. i dont know where to start, where do catfish uusuallyhang around in? when should i fish for catfish? what should i use? what are some technics and tips to get better at catching them?

make sure you have a strong set up

baits can be live suckers or bullheads (with dorsal fins snipped of to make it struggle).  if you don't like live you can use stinkbaits bought at most fishing stores

Finally a question I can answer!

Catfish are a very sensitive fish in the way they have taste buds on there entire body.

Now most people live under the impression that you need a smelly bait to catch catfish and thats just not true.

Most Large flathead or blue catfish prefer live bait as their food. Depending if you want to catch catfish you can eat or catfish you can brag about is what your bait preference should be.

For channel cats ...(whcih are the most edible between 3-6 pounds) I like to use anything from nightcrawlers chicken liver or even shrimp or crawfish. I had the most success in Florida actually using cooked steak..but to get it to stay on the hook longer..buy a cheap steak at the super market and cook it so its just brown on the outside and tough in the middle.. You can carve it up and use it as you like.

You want to have a medium heavy action rod with a spinning reel or a bait casting reel. You want atleast 20-30 pounds test or 20 pounds with some good drag on your reel. Float fishing or sinker fishing works good for catfish. If you have a boat look for where the water is deep if not and you are bank fishing(which isnt all that bad by the way 60 percent of catfisherman are bank fisherman) Try to find a spot and setup shop. I fished from a dock when in florida and had great success.

Be sure you have a net..pliers and a camera!!!

I don't like to eat cat fish they are yucky.I am in Australia and they are all over the place and You just catch them on worms (garden) is too easy I don't know if your catfish are the same.I am refering to fresh water catty's I don't know any others.Good Luck and happy Fishin!!!!

first start with a heavy action rod and reel with 20+ lb test line use a large egg sinker with a size 1 hook put a split shot between the sinker and hook with about a 10 to 12 inch lead. use a large chunk of beef liver large enough to cover the hook. cats like to be close to dams or spillways also like a calm pool. cast into the middle of the pool and wait. i Find that night time fishing for cats is best with the bite strong between 10 pm and 1am. don't bother the bait it needs to sit. just remember if it was easy they would call it catching!!!!
