Ok, let's say if I were to donate $5 million annually to start a new research charity foundation... how is the money being spent? I know they will be spent on research equipments and such, but will the scientist be paid?

  1. Yes, of course you have to pay the scientist's salary.  Scientists can't afford to work for years for all the years it will take to discover a new cure or whatever.  Scientists need to pay rent and grocery bills, too, ya know.  So yes, your research organization would have to budget for the scientist's salaries, benefits, office supplies, labratory supplies, phone lines, etc, just like any other business.
