What does it mean when the term "green house gases" is used such as "reduce green house gases by signing for online billing" i'm 50% sure i know i'm just not 100% like i know you are saving paper, etc by not using it and using the internet instead... so what exactly does it mean???

Thanks!!

  1. Hey i found this hard to understand myself, its a little confusing so ill make it simple, this explanation really did it for me though!

Basically greenhouse gases are gases that cause the greenhouse effect.

The greenhouse effect is the rise in temperature that the Earth experiences because certain gases in the atmosphere energy from the sun.

These "certain gases" are greenhouse gases which include: water vapor, carbon dioxide, nitrous oxide, and methane.

By wasting paper like you said or using cars we are generating more greenhouse gases into the atmosphere making it even hotter, so we need to generate less (internet generates less Greenhouse gases than wasting paper)

Hope You Understand 100% Now! =)

  2. Green-house gases are pollutants like CO2 that rise into the atmosphere and trap the heat from earth inside. This raises the temperature of the planet.

They get the name from how greenhouses work.

  3. hotter weather.

  4. "green house gases" are all gases which are transparent to visible light (as per sun light) but which reflect infra-red. The glass in a green-house behaves the same way. In the atmosphere most of the sun's energy approaches the ground as visible light. Once that light hits the ground (most) is converted into infra-red. If (more) of the infra-red is "trapped" then the temperature rises.

Different gases transmit/reflect different amounts of visible/IR radiation .Often the gases are compared to C02, meaning 1 tonne of a gas with a C02 equivalent of 2, would have the same effect as 2 tonnes of CO2. Some gases tend to rise, and collect at different heights in the atmosphere which can alter just how much effect they have. Ozone is a strong greenhouse gas. High up in the atmosphere, (where it's really cold)  it contributes little, but at "ground" level it has quite a large effect (as well as causing "burns" to the leaves of plants). Makes me think oxygen would probably be a greenhouse gas too. Methane has a large C02 equivalent.

Any process, INCLUDING using the Internet, requires energy and/or physical material. To produce these things means producing Co2 as part of electricity production, or methane in the growing/production/disposal of materials.

Any way what the statement given seems to imply  is that sum of, the amounts of each gas release for that process multiplied each gases C02 equivalent, is larger for paper banking than electronic banking.

Problem is do you consider the energy (and greenhouse gas released as a consequence of making that energy)  used in producing the equipment needed for electronic banking?

The amount of energy needed for refining silicon/the doping agents for making chips, and the transport costs adds up to a fair amount, but it's difficult to figure out how to factor this into "the equation"

  5. Carbon di oxide,Methane, water vapour all produce green house effect that cause globel warming.

Paper is made from trees, bamboo etc. When you use paper,it is made from cutting trees tyo make pulp. That increases the carbon dioxide in the air.
