if you are NOT attending? I kind of feel like calling to say we won't be attending only opens us up to the Why question, and I'd rather not hurt feelings.

  1. Just tell them you had a prior engagement and you won't be able to go.

  2. You *need* to let them know you won't be there.  They are counting on this information to plan their party.  Prepare a response (the truth would be nice) as to why you're not going, and call.

  3. It would hurt more feelings if you didn't respond at all.  If you're worried about it, just reply by mail saying you have a prior commitment.

  4. The truth of the matter is that if you can't attend you can't attend and you really don't owe and explanation.  A simple 'hey, we got your invitation yesterday and we're so happy you thought of us!  I wish we could attend but unfortunately we're not going to be able to but THANK YOU so much for the invite"  yada yada yada... They really only need a head count so they can continue with plans anyway, chances are they aren't gonna give you the third degree.

  5. Why not respond by letter? That way you don't have to listen to it. Either that or block out your number (*67 before you dial their phone number) and keep calling until you get the answering machine.

  6. Just say that you're unable to attend for personal reasons.  That will eliminate the "why" question at once.  It's nobody's business what you mean by "personal"; and you don't owe anyone an explanation anyway.

  7. I just sent out over 120 wedding invitations, and only got 60 replies. (it's a destination wedding, we knew most people would say no, but invited everyone anyway). Anyway, most people who weren't coming didn't respond, i'm sure for the same reason, but it's better just to be upfront rather than leaving people still wondering about your attendance. Just make up a reason you're not coming, and call, e-mail, or send a card back.

    =)
