Question:

Regular DVD's or upgrade to BluRay?

I need to buy a new DVD player because mine stopped working. I don't know much about DVD technology, so I'm not sure if I should buy another standard DVD player, or if it would be a better move to go with a BluRay device. Will all dvd's be BluRay in the near future, or will there still be standard discs? I don't have an HD TV set yet (I don't know if that makes a difference or not). Thanks for your help!!

  1. You can buy a regular DVD player at Radio Shack for about $40. The BluRay is a lot more. I'd buy the regular player and wait for the price of the BluRay discs and machines to come down, and they will. You won't get the full benefit from BluRay without an HDTV. Score one more for waiting.

  2. I would go ahead and buy BluRay if you can afford it. Eventually it will be the industry standard and DVD's will be phased out much like VHS tapes and audio cassettes. A BluRay player will still play standard DVD's, and will work with your current TV, although you won't get the full benefit until it's hooked up to an HD TV.

  3. My opinion is that unlike VHS and Standard DVDs. It will take much longer for Blue-Ray DVDs to become a regular thing for consumers. If I were you I would buy a PS3. That way your not spending money just on a Blu-Ray DVD Player. It has many other functions as well. Of course if you want to wait, I am sure both the price of Blu-Ray DVDs, and Blu-Ray DVD players will go down. Your choice.
