  1. And it also depends on when an opening comes up. They don't just make a cop a homicide detective because they want to be one.

  2. Haley here are the important tips to becoming a homicide detective.

#1) Work at an agency with a lot of homicides annually.  Nothing worse than having this aspiration when you agency only gets a few - not a full time gig.

#2) Spend many many years working very very hard as a beat officer.  That means your gonna have to spend time picking up stray dogs and cats and arresting drunk driver and catching burglars on patrol.  There will be years of midnights and three - eleven shifts in between.

#3) Your gonna have to be a very good general case detective for a long time before you dabble with homicides.  Your going to have to be an excellent interviewer and interogator.  Your going to have to believe you can get that confession - even if you know he won't give it up.

#4)  You most likely will never get to that position in your career - so don't limit yourself to just that.  Department offer many different opportunities and I get very disapointed when I see youngsters such as yourself, think the only prestigious job in the organization is a homicide detective.  There are many cogs in the gear - each is important to the overall mission.

  3. Depends on the department.

My big city department allowed you to take a detective test after 2 years on the job. I passed. Then I waited 6 years for enough openings, not in homicide but just in the detective division, to open up. Then when I was allowed into detective school I convinced the chief of detectives and the commander of the area I wanted to work in that I would be a good homicide d**k. Since they knew me and my good reputation the commander requested me. Luckily no politics interfered, like someone with more pull wanting the spot, since the area I wanted was the worst in the city with the most homicides. I made the mistake of staying a homicide detective for 11 years, should have moved on to something else, and ended up with PTSD.

Just an example. It is not like TV, The hours are very long, the reports are longer and scrutinized for years at a time by a lot of people, you rarely see your family and get even less sleep and you see things no human should have to see.

  4. First off if you always type like you are text messaging you will never get there.  Secondly, it depends on how good of an officer you are, the size of the department and politics.
