Currently my bathroom door swings into the bathroom, and it makes the bathroom uncomfortably small. I want to change the swing of the door so that it opens out from the bathroom. My question is.. why do I have to cut mortises for the hinges? What happens if I don't?

  1. if you dont cut rebates for the hinges they will bind as well as move the door over in its frame

  2. I would just buy a new pre hung door at Menards, Lowes or Home Depot. Make sure you the swing right so it opens to the outside. Most washroom doors are 28 inches. The doors are about 37 dollars and simple to install

  3. Why not try a pocket door. One that will slide into the wall? It is not normal for a door to swing out from a room like that.

  4. the hinges need the extra support of the recess, also stops the door binding as it closes. consider why your door opens as it does....will it be an obstruction or a danger to someone outside the wc if the door opens out? consider also removing entire frame and turning it around...nothing to recess no locks to re fit..no holes to patch up! just remove architrave, cut the nails/fixings holding the frame and swap around. this will only work if the door is hinged on the appropriate side for you...if not you can buy a pre hung door in a frame too...happy hanging!

  5. you can buy hinges which do not need rebating ..they are thinner than a normal hinge and one section fits inside the other ...here in the uk they are called hurle hinges ..but not sure about spelling of hurle .im a builder and have use them many times

  6. The door won't fit tight or.It will push the handel edge too far over and it won't shut. There is little play when hanging a door
