Hi there, I have been doing reiki for some time. I was speaking to another practitioner she was telling me that she gives herself reiki all the time where ever she may be. She places her right hand on her heart chakra and her left on her sacral chakra. I didnt quite get the explanation behind it, one hand is for receiving and one hand for giving? Can anyone offer a fuller explanation? Thanks x

  1. Hello.

What your friend is doing is a bit of a combination of things... However, In Ayurveda and therefore in most froms of chakra healing, the right hand is "expressive" or giving - while the left hand is "receptive" or the receiving hand.

In applying reiki to yourself, you can use many positions. But, by placing the hands alternately over different chakras, you can "redistribute energy" through the system. i.e. receiving energy through the right hand and moving it via the left to complete a "circuit" between two chakra points. This will collect and redistribute the energies evenly betwee n the two contact points. Even across the "knots" above the sacral and heart chakras. Once accomplished, Reiki energies will settle into each area as appropriate for you.

In your example, perhaps your friend is very strong in the heart chakra, but feels a deficiency in the sacral chakra (or vice versa). She can move this energy from one area to another and even move it up and down the chakra line (even through the knots) Sacral > Solar Plexus > Heart and vice versa.

You could also use throat or even third eye or crown contacts in the same way. It just depends on where you find your deficiency to be or what you are led to accomplish.

    hope this helps for you.

  2. In many traditions the left hand is for receiving and the right is for giving.

Generally in Reiki once you activate the flow if Reiki energy it just flows out of both hands.

Self healing is highly recommended as a daily practice for Reiki practitioners and any Reiki Master Teacher worth their salt will spend a fair amount of time teaching this and emphasizing it in Level 1.

This keeps the practitioner more balanced and healthy so they are in a better position to serve.

There are many ways to do self healing some involve visualization of the flow of energy and no placement of hands on the body and others placing hands on the body in a complex series of positions.

What your friend is diong is chosing two chakras that hold significance for her and are probably easy to access. The heart is closer to the heavens and the sacral chakra is closer to the earth. It would be logical to focus on these two to bring them into harmony with eachother and to allow the energy to flow to the rest of the body through these points.
