  1. The "soul", if it exists, does so as a non-physical phenomenon. As such it is not open to scientific investigation.

And I doubt that your soul is dictated by your genes. for example, if we successfully use Gene Therapy to treat a genetic disorder (like cystic fibrosis), does that mean we have somehow changed the patient's soul?

Furthermore - the mechanism of memory, though incompletely understood, is known to be the result of connections between neurons (nerve cells) in the brain - not a result of the genes within those cells. Identical twins share the exact same genes, but they do not share each others' memories.

And what about the many organisms which have no nerve cells - and therefore no cognition and no memory?

Even within the areas of philosophy and psychology, the question of the existence of a soul is debated. for example - do you receive your soul upon conception? If so, what does that mean for the roughly 1/3 of all pregnancies which fail before the mother even realizes she is pregnant? Alternatively, does your soul manifest upon "quickening" of the foetus (when movements are first felt by the mother; usually around 18-21 weeks) or when the baby takes its first breath upon being born?
