my friend has a dell i have a gateway both have vista can i use her cd to reinstall it on mine

  2. Yes, the discs themselves are completely unprotected by design (you can modify them to your hearts content) but you need your own product-key if you want to activate it.

    Vista is on DVD btw.

    If you are talking about a _standard_ OS disc, then there is definitely no problem.  If it's one of those annoying vendor-distributed scummy things, then you might get some random garbage installed that you can't use, but the OS itself should install no problem (unless the vendor really has screwed you over and not given you a standard vista installable).

  3. If it is a Windows Vista Disc you can, but with your own product key. If it is a recovery disc that came with the Gateway computer, then you probably can't, because the disc contains drivers that are specific for that computer. You should have received your own disks, or made own when you first got your computer. If you don't have one, or can't make a copy from your own pc, you should contact your computer's manufacturer and ask them to send you one, although they might charge you around $20 and maybe the shipping.
