  1. The problem in nandigram was aquiring AGRICULTURAL land for SEZs( for indonasian firm) and that too at very cheap rates in order to the so called Industrialization of west Bengal.

But the mamta banerji led campaign against the move proved to be a big hurdle for CPM Govt. The farmers protested too and subsequent deployment of army to solve the matter, added the salt to their wounds and worsened the situation.

Later the muslims ( a minority in the state) had a misconception that only their lands were being taken away which further was like "Sone pe suhagaa"

and it became a national issue.

  2. SEZ is the acronym for 'Special Economic Zone', a concept that aims at creating a huge belt of land available for industries and large business enterprises to set up corporate offices, manufacturing plants, factories, and other other commercial set-ups. Since the cities are being increasingly over-populated and there is a paucity of land available in the major cities in India, the government plans to creat SEZs which are usually satellite townships closer to a major city, and the industries and companies intending to set up their base in the SEZs get tax and other benefits (depending on the policies of the government).

The Nandigram controvery is around the protest of the local resident villagers in and around Nandirgam (which is located around 45 minutes from the eastern Indian city of Calcutta) who think that the government's plan to create an SEZ might jeopardize their livelihood (mostly agriculture), rob them of their land, and make them even more poorer.

    Hope that helps....
