The Viola patron reiterated that a digression into the Serie B is not a choice and they need to remain in the Serie, despite their dip in form in recent weeks.
Andrea Della Valle, Fiorentina President, has stated that talks regarding any possibilities of going down into the Serie B are prohibited, as they are embroiled in the battle
to stay in the Serie A.
Fiorentina had a decent start to the Serie A campaign, however inconsistent results led to a dip in form which has continued since the past few months. This plight has
led them to the 17th standing in the Lega table, and they are hovering five points from the drop-zone.
However, this is not the first time that the club has been embroiled in a relegation battle to remain in the Serie A. The last time the Viola were in such despair was in
2004-05, where they successfully managed to remain in the Lega. With eight more rounds remaining in the Serie A campaign, the relegation battle will be really close.
To show the relative competition at the bottom half of the table, it can be seen that only 4 points separate the 17th positioned Fiorentina and the 11th
positioned Atalanta. Fiorentina are on 33 points after 30 rounds in the league, and Atalanta sit on 37 points.
Della Valle was talking to the assembled press on Thursday and in his speech he mentioned:
“We’ve been through a situation like this before. We surely will come out of it. I never expected to find myself in the same situation as seven years ago but the reality
is this. Let us collect these six or seven points, save ourselves and then rebuild it all together.”
The Chief Executive understood the anguish of the fans, but maintained that this was not the time to point fingers; it was time to stay united. He further commented:
“I understand the disappointment and anger of the fans, but now we must all remain close. Here we are all examining our conscience. I disagree with those who say this group
has no personality. I saw the players yesterday and today and they look eager to beat relegation.”
Fiorentina play AC Milan on matchday 31 fixture of the Serie A.
