Relentless digging ferret?

I have had ferrets all my life and i'm a proud owner of 4. One just turned one year old his names Larry. Well recently Larry has been digging relentlessly at the carpet right at where my gate is (gate that keeps them in there big room). My Question is this how can i stop him from digging i've tried bitter apple, time out spray for ferrets even lemon juice but nothing. Its almost like he knows if he can just get over or under the gate he'll be out of his room. Also the gate its a typical baby gate and now he's even biting it and pulling it inwards from the bottom. I've used the baby gate method to keep them in their room for almost 7 years. Never had a problem with any of them. So Please Help me !!

  1. try getting a larger box with a hole cut kinda higher into the said so they can jump into it. fill it part way up with rice.... they go crazy digging at it and may help stop the digging in less desirable spots

  2. buy them this. http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/pr...

Or you can get a 20 pound bag of long grain (non instant) rice at walmart.

or you can get this http://www.yesterdaysnews.com/smallAnima...

It says perfect for small animals who love to dig or burrow just like ferrets.
