Question:

Reliability of engine oil life monitor?

If I wait to change my oil until the monitor tells me, I suspect it will be close to the 5,000 mile point. I've heard with the current blend of engine oils, changing every 3,000 could be considered excessive especially if it's synthetic. I'm not using synthetic and not burning any between changes. So where's the line between getting your moneys worth out of an oil change and accelerated wear from dirty oil?

  1. Aside from the reliability of the oil life monitor, realistically you can easily drive 5,000 to 10,000 miles without needing an oil change.  The mileage would be reduced for mostly city driving and increased closer to the 10,000 mark if you drive mostly on the highway.  In addition, you can squeeze a little more mileage out if you are changing your oil at least every three months.  If you only drive 2000 miles per year the same rules would not apply.

  2. i check my oil level and color to decide when to change and it usually between 5000 to 6500 miles.  Car is heavily modified and I drive the c**p out of it but do not burn any oil so it works out.  If you want to be sure, look up Blackstone Labs and for a small fee, you can have your used oil analyzed.  They will tell you exactly what is in it and how long you can go before the next change.
