Question:

Religion... and can people just let non believers be?

i am just curious? i dont believe that god exists myself, or that i want to dedicate myself to any one religion. im a scientist and evolution is rock solid in my mind. to be blunt about it i believe when we die we rot in the ground...

But i respect those who do believe in god and support their religious beliefs if it makes them happy. What i am curious about is i get alot of slack for not believing from those that do around me, is it possible that those who are religious can respect my beliefs as i do theirs?

  4. ATHEIST -  someone who does not believe in a God – any God – not just the Christian one.  But that does not mean they do not hold strong moral or religious beliefs!  They can follow any religion that does not have a god and there are a lot of those!!

    Like BUDDHISM – Religious teaching from Buddha and his followers that by destroying greed, hatred and delusion (the cause of all suffering) man can attain perfect enlightenment!!

    But the simple answer is that it does not happen to any other religion but the Christians!!

    As a scientist with an open mind why have you not seen that and thought it through?

    Ask yourself why it is only Christians that get attacked and not the other religions?!!!!

    Do you not recognise that Christians are provoking retaliation and repudiation for their terrible attitudes?!!

    Perhaps if Christians stopped their intolerant, egotistical, hate filled and bigoted postings things might change!!

    Perhaps if Christians stopped eschewing education, science, evolution works of fiction and much, much more things might change!!

    Perhaps if Christians stopped being the only religion opposing human rights and persecuting g**s, pro choice and so much more things might change!!

    Perhaps if Christians stopped demanding freedom of religion whilst they deny it to all non Christians and persecute them things might change!! !!!

    If Christians rediscovered the god of love and forgiveness and put aside all those terrible human emotions things would definitely change!!!!


  5. I agree, but since you are an atheist you can start with instructing your comrades.  

    Us Christians have a saying, "Why do you see the speck in your brother's eye but fail to notice the beam in your own eye"Luke 6:41.

    Look at even the answers to THIS question  from atheists such as, "They can't be stopped. They're a disease.

    Only we can save them."  

      

    I find this rather presumptuous because this isn't like religious people raided a atheist forum.  It is pretty much the opposite in fact.Obviously this is a religious and spirituality section.

    If you think about it or look at the answers most atheists come here to go around disagreeing with Christian beliefs.  They are free to do that within the rules, but to complain about the opposite happening....

    If people ask you about your religion or atheism that is one thing, but to push it on them is another.

  6. I can respect you and what you believe. I am not going to try to convert you, as only One can do that. I won't bash you or send you to h**l either, as there is no such place. Yes,I'm a Christian, but there are other Christians who would beg to differ with me. For I do not believe in their "h**l". I believe in a God of love, a Savior who is a hundred percent victorious (not 30%), and a lake of fire that corrects, cleanses, and purifies. I'm sure to get many thumbs down on this answer, but that's OK. They persecuted my Lord too.

  7. Some people feel that it is their duty to impose their beliefs upon others who are unwilling.

    I've never had an issue with a little bit of friendly debate or intelligent discussion. However, when that turns to a proselytizing session, the conversation is over.

    All you can do is stand your ground, be respectful but firm about how much of it that you are willing to put up with. I've found that with some, it's easier to remove yourself rather than try and explain yourself.

  8. Yes, it's possible. Not all religious people are intolerant and disrespectful; some are, surprisingly, very tolerant and respectful, and understanding as well. But you might want to look for them off of Y!A. I have one best friend, and a lot of good acquaintances that believe in God and practice Christianity that understand and respect my atheism.

  9. Usually any "pressure" you get from Christians is because they care about you and your future. It isn't a matter of respecting your beliefs. The common analogy is this: If you saw a fire coming down the street uncontrolled, would you urge your neighbors to leave their homes? Yet some of them might not believe that there is a fire and decide to stay in their homes. You would probably be more forceful in urging them to leave. So what you are asking Christians to do is to let you stay in your current situation, which they feel is dangerous.

    I'm very sorry to hear that you believe that life ends totally at death. That must be a sort of a dreary point of view. However, you certainly must live the life you believe, and it's commendable you don't try to live a lie, as I'm sure many do.

    I would certianly leave you alone. After all, I don't have all the answers either.

  16. If they are trying to share with you something that they have discovered, which has changed their lives profoundly, it is likely because they care about you and want you to have that same experience. I would at least encourage you to keep that in mind.

    Also, even the most respected declarations of science have often needed to be reworked or dismissed because of newer discoveries. We are all wise to keep an open mind in light of that.

  17. For the entire history of humanity Man has always imposed his beliefs on other men. What make you think we are about to do it differently now?  It is human Nature!

    To be honest, I'm frustrated by an attitude I see frequently. I see it in many Christians, Atheists, Agnostics, Pagans, Satanists, etc. (Not to say that all or even a large portion of any one of these religions have this attitude). The attitude says that there can only be one right set of beliefs and that anyone who subscribes to a different set is inferior to those who have the right beliefs.

    I personally believe that people are unique and therefore have unique spiritual and/or philosophical paths. I also believe that no path is superior or inferior to another.

    Webster's Dictionary defines religion as follows, "Cause, principle or system of beliefs held with ardour and faith." Surely this is an apt description of evolution. Evolution is a 'belief system' i.e. a religion !

    Models of science are subject to change for both creationists and evolutionists. But, the beliefs that these models are built on are not. The problem is that most scientists do not realize that it is the belief (religion) of evolution that is the basis for scientific models (the interpretations, or stories) used to attempt an explanation of the present. Evolutionists are not prepared to change their actual belief that all life can be explained by natural processes and that no God is involved (or even needed). Evolution is a religion to which they are commited. Christians need to wake up to this.

    I don't because I accept people (im christian), you cant make that assumption of everybody....and hardcore christians/athiests do the exact same thing no matter what side you look at....
