Question:

Religiously asking, should we take bets on 2012?

Offer the price at evens, and then, in 2013, give the proceeds to charities to alleviate poverty and global warming.

Perhaps another use would be researching technology to resurrect the Mayans, so we can ask them why they chose to end at 2012.

  1. Maybe we'll get hit by one honking asteroid!  Maybe the mothership will return!  I just hope I live long enough to know which it was that got me!  But, hey, I'll be 70 then, so I guess I have nothing to complain about.

  4. No.

Unfair wagers are considered a sin.

Gambling is considered much the same as consuming alcohol and other activities that can become vices. If done in moderation then there is no problem. If not done in moderation then you can be in big trouble.

    The Catholic Church officially teaches:

Games of chance (card games, etc.) or wagers are not in themselves contrary to justice.

    They become morally unacceptable when:

    • They deprive someone of what is necessary to provide for his needs and those of others

    • The passion for gambling risks becoming an enslavement

Unfair wagers and cheating at games constitute grave matter.

For more information, see the Catechism of the Catholic Church, sections 2413: http://www.nccbuscc.org/catechism/text/p...

    With love in Christ.

  8. I'll takes bets on people asking this question again :)

You don't have to resurrect the Mayans to answer that question, it is well know in academic circles and if common knowledge would end these ridiculous questions.

The only thing the Mayan calender predicts is the end of a cycle know as precession, which is basically as 26,000 year wobble of the Earth's axis. It is not only non-technical, but also non-knowledgeable. The precession of the Earth is independent of our method of time-keeping. What is happening is that the direction in which the Earth's axis of rotation is pointing is moving. The duration of one precession cycle is about 26.000 years, so in about 13.000 years the Earth's axis of rotation will point in a direction 46 degrees away from its current direction. (The tilt of the Earth's axis with respect to the plane of the Earth's orbit around the sun is about 23 degrees, the Earth's precession is (roughly) a motion with respect to the plane of orbit around the sun).
