Question:

Relocate or Commute?

I just got an offer for a job 50-55 miles away from where I am and they are offering £15000. Train and bus it out the q as its too long and many changes. So I either need to get a car and commute or move closer. I could be looking to stay at the place for at least 2-3 years so in terms of relocation I have the option to buy or rent. but I'm not sure about costs involved. If I buy my father would help as I prob wouldn't get a mortgage on my own. I would look to rent out any spare rooms if I bought. what are your thoughts to justify one of the three options (buy/rent/commute by car)?

Thanks

  1. Would definitely talk to the company and see what the long term prospects are. When you know, decide then, but I would look at relocating. I used to travel 75 miles each way, good in the summer, light mornings and nights, but in the winter, the darkness gets to you. You could give the commute a try, but if your paying for your own travelling costs, they will soon eat into your money.

Good luck with whatever you decide anyway

  2. £15000 that's c**p.stay where you are and take another job

  3. Rent - possibly see if you can rent a room in a shared house rather than renting a full place on you own. It will also give you a feel for somewhere different and you can always pop home at weekends

A 100 mile round trip every day will become very tiring and expensive on fuel and wear and tear on your car.

    Good luck

  4. hmm your gonu have to move do you have friends near or rent somewhere for now and once you have the skills reapply for jobs near where you want to live.

  5. I suggest rent.  Commuting will be too stressful and too much time wasted.
