Question:

Relocating Cast Iron Radiators?

I'm in the middle of major renos and will need to relocate some of my cast iron hot-water radiators. I have read that the easiest way to do so is to cut the steel pipes running to & from the radiator and to re-attach them upon moving. Sounds simple enough but once they are cut will the steel pipes (with layers of paint) "unscrew" themselves from the unit and the supply pipe? Is it possible that the steel has "seized". The operation seems pretty straighforward; I'm just thinking that I may be missing some tips or pointers.

Anyone care to help or share their experience?

thanks in advance!!!

  1. I doubt the pipe is steel, it's probably Iron.  It has likely been there for decades, so once you mess with it, you will undoubtedly have some problems & leaks.  If you're not up to re-threading and replacing a lot of pipe, you might want to have a plumber on standby, especially one who has experience with these.  Moving the radiators might get you into the same issues, as they are put together in sections.

BTW; I envy you for having real working radiators..  that's the nicest kind of heat a house can have.  I really miss them.  Best of luck to you!
