  1. I live in Portland and understand the public schools are better than many.  Lewiston/Auburn is the second largest urban area but is high crime and the schools are sketchy at best.  There are very upscale and expensive communities around Portland, but the city is reasonable and has some really nice neighborhoods--Munjoy Hill and the west end are very nice in-town areas.  The most expensive suburb and the best public school system is in Cape Elizabeth.  But I find South Portland every bit as "nice" and much more affordable than the Cape.  It is right across the bridge from Porltand.  There's a lot to see and do within easy distance of Portland, and all year round--not just the summer.  Further up route one, the Mid-coast is very fine and family oriented.  The cities of the mid-coast include Wiscassett, Rockland, Camden, and Belfast.  Belfast is my favorite but a long way up the coast from here.
