Relocating to france?

Question

I am planning to relocate to France within the next year. Does anyone have any advice on areas to live, what to expect, etc... any advice would be greatly appreciated. I will be graduating from culinary school very soon, and am looking for some experience.

I was born in France and used to live there. Mostly I just know Paris and the surrounding area. While most expatriates living in France wind up there, it may or may not be for you. You might want to research some of France's other regions as well: Brittany, Normandy, Alsace, the Loire Valley, Langedoc-Roussillon, "PACA" (Provence Alpes Côte-d'Azur), and a host of others. Do you want to live in a city or in the country, is sunny weather important to you, is it important to you to be located near a large community of other English-speaking expatriates, etc? One thing I strongly recommend anywhere you go, though it's easier to find in Paris than elsewhere, is FUSAC (France USA Contacts), a free magazine distributed throughout the city every two weeks. It comes in very handy in terms of finding work, housing, etc. The Paris Voice is good as well.

The gastronomical center of France is LYON in the Rhône Alpes region.... It is also the third largest city in the country (after Paris and Marseille). Lyon is a beautiful city, and the surrounding countryside is also quite lovely. If you want to acquire experience in your field of work I would say this is the area of France to look into. (Bocuse has his restaurants here, as do many other excellent chefs).  Grenoble is also a great city for cuisine... smaller in size but also very interesting and in a valley on the way to most of the best ski resorts.
