Remaining Free Agents and where they currently stand –NHL Special Part 3
Shane Doan (Phoenix Coyotes)
No one could have imagined that, after leading Phoenix Coyotes to their first ever franchise Pacific Division title along with making it to the Western Conference Finals in the 2012 National Hockey League (NHL) Playoffs, that captain Shane Doan would be on the verge of changing teams.
However, as the free agency has opened up and so has a lot of inside information about the veteran forward’s tussle with his long-time and original club, Phoenix.
Doan’s five-year, $22.75 million contract came to an end this year and while Phoenix Coyotes are not the ones saying no to re-signing Shane Doan, his prospects of coming back with the team look bleak.
Due to management related issues, the left winger is not ready to compromise on his position, but continues to push back his deadline of considering other options, obviously showing his soft spot for Phoenix.
At the age of 35, Shane Doan might not have a Stanley Cup under his belt, but he definitely is able to boast about his abilities and leading a team to the Western Conference Finals after being ranked as one of the worst clubs in the North American league.
Picked up as the seventh overall player, Shane Doan has a total of 788 points (318 goals, 470 assists) under his name in 1,198 games played in.
Jason Arnott (St. Louis Blues)
Jason Arnott was a driving force in the St. Louis Blues run to top the Western Conference last regular season and it almost came true as they ended just two points below Presidents’ Trophy winners, the Vancouver Canucks.
In 72 regular season games played, Arnott has 34 points (17 goals, 17 assists) and a surprising plus-minus rating of 13 in his favour. His one-year, $2.5 million contract came to an end this July and is looking to either move on or sign a longer, bigger deal with the Blues.
At the age of 37, Arnott might not be the offensive force, that he at one time used to be, but the veteran centre definitely provides physical depth and tremendous leadership to whichever team he is a part of.
Arnott was drafted by Edmonton Oilers as the seventh overall pick during round-one of the 1993 NHL Entry Draft and was in his first season with St. Louis Blues after playing for teams such as New Jersey Devils, Dallas Stars, Nashville Predators and Washington Capitals.
