Remi Cusin wins second stage as Berschel takes overall lead in Tour of Denmark 2011
Cofidis, Le Credit En Ligne team’s Remi Cusin showed a magnificent effort and took his first ever professional victory in the second stage of Tour of Denmark 2011 on Thursday, August 4. Matti Breschel took the overall leader’s yellow jersey.
The race started in Grindsted and ended in Arhus. The 25-year-old French cyclist took the total of 4 hours, 34 minutes and 19 seconds to cover the distance of 189 kilometers.
Matti Breschel of Rabobank Cycling was in runner-up place with the same timing of the French. In the last three finishing circuit the two cyclists ran away from the peloton and Daniele Bennati failed to hold pace and grabbed third place with a difference
of 2 seconds.
With only 37 kilometres remaining, the group of three cyclists made their first breakaway lead including, Kurt Asle Arvesen (Team Sky), Michael Reihs (Christina Watches-Onfone) and Lasse Bochman (Glud & Marstrand-LRO).
They working together and were joined by two cyclists Christopher Juul Jensen (Glud & Marstrand-LRO) and Jack Bobridge (Garmin-Cervelo) who came across the bridge quickly.
The two cyclists of Leopard Trek team’s Jakob Fuglsang and Martin Mortensen increased his pace and managed to go away from the leaders and gain a lead of 45 seconds. Saxo-SunGard team pulled them back with 20 kilometres to go.
In the last kilometres, several attacks came from the cyclists Sebastien Turgot and Steven Kruijswijk but Cusin launched an aggressive attack in the final three kilometres and built a decent gap. He was followed by Breschel while peloton closed the gap and
caught the other cyclist as Cusin got away and crossed the finish line.
Rabobank cycling team’s Breschel took the overall lead with the timing of 8 hours, 33 minutes and 28 seconds. Sacha Modolo was runner-up with 4 seconds behind Matti.
Michael Morkov (Saxo Bank Sungard) finished third with difference of 7 seconds ahead of Daniele Bennati and Nikola Aistrup.
Michael Reihs (Christina Watches-Ofone) took the overall mountain classification ahead of Lasse Bochmann. Rene Jorgensen (Christina Watches-Ofone) took the title of most aggressive rider standing ahead of Lasse Bochmann.
The next stage will start in Århus and end in Vejle. All the cyclists will cover the distance of 181kilometres.
