  1. My plates are stored flat and stacked on top of each other....I really don't like it but it works, I couldn't afford to make the slat type storage for 18 plates!

However, I really like the open cabinet with slats like a dish washer to hold the plates on edge. They are accessible and fun, but not very practical if you have lots of plates.

  2. I have seen islands with a deep slide out drawer where the plates are vertical in slots. (sort of like how you place them in a dishwasher)

Here are inserts to put in a cabinet to place them the same way.

  3. In a recent remodel I did something a little different....Used deep drawers (roughly 16" deep X 20" wide) in a pantry area. Then had contractor install beadboard in the bottom of each (type used to hang tools in a garage). Then screwed four dowels into the board to make sections in the drawers so that things don't shift. Then I am able to stack each collection of plates, dessert plates and saucers in the same drawer, and they don't shift. Keeps us organized. Great thing is since they are in low drawers, you don't have lift large quantities from upper cabinets (and the kids can reach so they can help setting the table). Works for us, but we have a large kitchen...in a smaller one, where you have tons of appliances under counter, might not be a good idea.

  4. Ours are just piled flat on the shelf, but I have seen some areas divided by dowels used for standing plates on end.
