  1. I personally am a big fan of Hamachi, if you are trying to connect from a computer where you can install it https://secure.logmein.com/products/hama... you can download the free version and it lets you use it with up to 5 computers at once, It make it really simple because the VPN is near zero-config and you can access your computer like any other machine on a LAN. One the biggest issues i had before i switched to Hamachi was that your ip changes every few days if your ISP does not give you a static ip [they rarely do]. The other option would be yes to set your modem/router to port forward or put the machine you want to access on a DMZ, but i would also suggest you sign-up for a dynamic DNS service too like http://www.dyndns.com/services/dns/dyndn... this service is supposedly free but I have little experience myself with it. I am currently actively working on this problem myself right now because Hamachi does require you to install it, which in many cases is not preferable and it isn't open source.

  2. Make sure you enable remote connections first (and the PC must be Win XP Pro or higher)

Right-Click My Computer, Properties then Remote tab (Far right) and ebale remote connections.

Route Port: 3389 on your ADSL router to Port 3389 on your Computers IP address.

    Thanks.

  3. Port forwarding

  4. You need to forward port 3389 so that all incoming requests on port 3389 are sent to port 3389 on the computer.

  5. Your router must support port forwarding.

You must have a static public IP address.

The pc to which you wish to connect must have a static LAN IP address.

You must set the port forward for port 3389 to go to the static LAN IP address of the pc in the port forwading table.

You link up by entering the public static IP address in Remote Desktop and it enters the port 3389 automatically.  The router sees a port 3389 incoming request and forwards it to the pc of interest.

    Now for the down side:

Opening the port in the router enables all sorts of undesirable access.  The pc that is being accessed is on the firing line for hackers.
